TOPENG MASQUERADE
A play between Italian commedia dell'arte and
Indonesian wayang topeng
The magnificent Topeng masks on stage immediately set the tone: a cross-pollination between cultures, with a touch of mystery. The richness of colours and the deep sound of the gongs, combined with Black Pencils surprising instrumentation: recorder, pan flute, viola, accordion and percussion.
The new music specialists of Black Pencil join forces with the contemporary gamelan ensemble Kyai Fatahillah from Indonesia.

LA NOCHE ETERNA

The mystery surrounding the night and its expression in music and movement is one of the pillars of the performance La Noche Eterna.

100 YEARS OF ALMERE
A new sense of freedom
How do you do justice to the wonderful history of the city of Almere?
From wide water to solid ground, from flat plane to height. A young history, in which stone and green together build the total picture. The place where almost 220,000 people now live, on its way to becoming the fifth city of the Netherlands.

SIT FAST
Sit firmly for the power of imagination
A repetitive basis, a cantus firmus as a foundation for a piece of music that develops in freedom. This principle has great success in contemporary music, but has its roots in a rich history. Black Pencil forges the most beautiful and virtuoso pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque together with the present: the pulse of Padding and Purcell . The listener, on the edge of his seat: from which period does this hypnotic work come?
INTERIOR 123
The next step in music experience
Imagine: a limitless experience for hearing, sight, smell, touch. You barely move and yet you go from room to room. Only the wonderful combination of Florian Magnus Maier 's music, Marcel Wierckx's virtual reality creation, the spaces of the Rembrandt House , the paintings of Joan Miró and the timbre of Black Pencil make this possible. An installation for example after a concert, at a festival, or in a museum.
TOTALITER ALITER
What kind of world lies hidden behind death?
In Totaliter Aliter, Ensemble Black Pencil and the National Women's Youth Choir make a return trip to the afterlife. The main menu features the composition of the same name by Dutch composer Peter Vigh, who was inspired by the book 'Eindeloos Bewustzijn' by Pim van Lommel . The brand new music is framed by musical visions by Hildegard von Bingen and songs from Cantigas de Santa Maria .
LA VOLTA
Virtuoso Broken Consort

The La Volta program is based on the performance practice of music and compositions from the Elizabethan period. Specifically, Thomas Morley's unique book: ' First Book of Consort Lessons ' (1599), the most important Renaissance publication for 'Broken Consort'. The music shows a wide variety of styles, including that of John Dowland , Thomas Morley , Klaas de Vries , Roderik de Man , David Dramm and Oene van Geel .

CHANSON DE GESTE
Chanson de Geste is an energetic programme
featuring Luciano Berio's various ‘Sequenzas’ , new composition written especially written for this project, together with parts from 'Die Kunst der Fuge' by J. S. Bach.

PULSO LlANERO
The traditional "Música Llanera" arises on the flat plains (Los Llanos) of the river Orinoco in Venezuela and Colombia. This music, mostly composed by rural farmers, thunders forward in a fierce gallop and has been over the years a source of inspiration for many folk composers, singers and writers.
BLACK PENCIL
"I am Mehmed the Black Pencil, master of humans and Jinns..."
Mehmed Siyah Kalem (Mehmed the Black Pencil) became known with those words for centuries. The uniqueness in the art of Siyah Kalem lies in his depictions of supernatural creatures. The essence and inspiration of the ‘BLACK PENCIL’ performance is derived from the expressive power of those miniatures. A blend between illusion and illustration, sometimes flat, sometimes exuberant,
COME OUT, CAIONI!

Black Pencil’s fascinating instrumentation and arrangements make full use of all possibilities to showcase the contrasts between the pieces. From the 346 works, Black Pencil has carefully selected the most beautiful. The remarkable diversity of the music remains fully intact in the way they have curated the program.

INTO SPACE

Black Pencil performs a diverse and captivating program around this theme, ranging from early to contemporary music, featuring works by Couperin, Van Eyck, Debussy, Tsoupaki, and Moore.
