Come Out, Caioni! Imagine: at a crossroads of Transylvanian roads, an eager enthusiast in the 17th century compiles a musical collection.

What a remarkably wide-ranging interest this monk, Johannes Caioni, had! His collection can be heard as the playlist of someone from a prosperous and cosmopolitan region. Secular songs, Hungarian and Romanian folk dances, and dances in Western European style, instrumental Baroque pieces, and church music. Additionally, absolute masterpieces by Claudio Monteverdi and Orlando di Lasso. The richness is overwhelming.

Black Pencil’s fascinating instrumentation and arrangements make full use of every possibility to highlight the contrasts between the pieces. Recorders, pan flutes, an extensive collection of percussion, viola, and harmonica pump adrenaline through the veins with infectious rhythms!

But the five musicians also master the art of letting pure stillness linger in the air.

How can simplicity be so expressive, beautiful, and powerful?

The Codex Caioni was lost for a long time and was found in the 1980s, bricked up in a wall where it had been hidden during World War II as protection from the Russians. From the 346 pieces, Black Pencil has selected the very best. The remarkable diversity of the music remains intact in the way they have structured the program.

Come Out, Caioni flips through one of the most fascinating music collections from Europe. Join in the treasure hunt!
