What kind of world lies hidden behind death? Everyone has secretly thought about life after death. The fascination with near-death experiences is not strange to anyone. In Totaliter Aliter, Ensemble Black Pencil and the National Women's Youth Choir make a return trip to the afterlife.
Totaliter Aliter, is Latin for Totally Different. A term from the Middle Ages that a monk passed on in a dream, after he had seen the universe after death. “Totaliter Aliter. It is completely different than we imagine."
The main menu features the composition of the same name by Dutch composer Peter Vigh . The brand new music is framed by musical visions by Hildegard von Bingen and songs from Cantigas de Santa Maria.
Visions of the afterlife, such as those of Hildegard von Bingen, are centuries old. So are near-death experiences, which are still often experienced today. Impressive and universal reports of people who were able to briefly witness death. Cardiologist Pim van Lommel took near-death experiences seriously and collected countless cases to provide insight into this mysterious phenomenon. His book Eindeloos Bewustzijn is now a bestseller and his research that appeared in The Lancet was picked up worldwide.
Composer Peter Vigh draws inspiration in his new composition 'Totaliter Aliter' from reports of near-death experiences and the book 'Eindeloos Bewustzijn' by Pim van Lommel. In the combination of the mysterious, colourful line-up of ensemble Black Pencil (recorder/pan flute/viola/accordion/percussion) and the young voices of the National Women's Youth Choir, he saw the ideal line-up to lift the veil of the afterlife.
Totaliter Aliter is a journey through a universe that is completely different, where space and time take on other dimensions. Fragments of experiences, the dark tunnel with light at the end, the bright white light, the soul that floats above its own body and also the frightening phases of a near-death experience flash by in this brand new work.
Vigh's premiere is stylishly framed by spiritual choral works by Hildegard von Bingen, the German mystic abbess who wrote visionary choral compositions in the twelfth century and who went down in history as the first female composer. In addition, Santa Maria, strelo de dia from the Cantigas de Santa Maria is performed. One of the largest collections of monophonic songs in Western medieval literature. Gaelic-Portuguese songs that were recorded in the thirteenth century during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile.
