BAROK À LA FOLK
A journey through folk music and Baroque splendor

Music is boundless. Throughout the centuries, composers have been inspired by the folk music that surrounded them. In Baroque à la Folk, Black Pencil delves into the intriguing connections between Baroque music and the rich traditions of folk music from various cultures. A program that sparkles with virtuosity, emotion, and surprises.

Folk-inspired music has always been an endless source of inspiration for Black Pencil. The ensemble is captivated by the expressive power of folk elements: sometimes it manifests as complex, raw, and powerful, other times subtle, soft, and simple.

In Baroque à la Folk, the five musicians celebrate with their range of instruments how folk music not only influenced the Baroque masters but continues to fascinate and move audiences today.

It takes you on a musical journey where two worlds go hand in hand, and boundaries fade. Let yourself be surprised by the versatility and perfect harmony of Baroque and folk in this concert program. Experience the fusion of these cultures, together with Ensemble Black Pencil.

Folk Music in Baroque Sounds: Black Pencil’s Journey Through Countries and Times

The program features masterpieces such as Georg Philipp Telemann’s Concerto alla Polonese and Ouverture burlesque, Jean Hotteterre’s La Nopce Champêtre, and excerpts from Henry Purcell’s vibrant The Fairy Queen.

In addition, Black Pencil makes room for beautiful Baroque-inspired folk songs from Ireland and Scandinavia, as well as stunning Old-Slavic traditional songs. Each piece is given the unique Black Pencil touch: a playful combination of traditional instruments and surprising arrangements.

Telemann, a master at weaving international styles, demonstrates in this program his fascination with Polish and Turkish folk music. Jean Hotteterre’s work, originally written for the musette (an elegant French bagpipe), receives a surprising twist with the enchanting sounds of the accordina. The Fairy Queen is a semi-opera by Henry Purcell, a so-called "Restoration spectacle."

Black Pencil zooms in on the folk character of several exciting dances.
